Antonio Chedid, M.D. of Lake Forest, Illinois moved on Friday, January 29th, after almost 80 years of a glorious and fulfilling life. He was born in 1936 in Palo Alto, Colombia, the son of Marie and Aziz Chedid, of Mexico City. He was the oldest of five children. He is survived by a family who loves him so much and is so sad to see his wisdom and energy leave their lives. He raised his family in Lake Forest with his loving and beautiful wife Houda. He leaves behind three children, Marie-Claude “Mimi” (James) Pacelli, Erica (T. Donovan) Eckhardt, and his son Anthony John (Frances).
Dr. Chedid had six grandchildren, George, the witty Teddy, Charlie, and the beautiful Charlotte and Genevieve. He was relieved to know his name would live on with his fiery grandson Anthony John Chedid IV. His children were so lucky and proud to have him as their loving father. Dr. Chedid was educated as a surgeon and physician in Madrid, Spain. He immigrated to the United States in 1968 and began his career at Michael Reese Hospital and the University of Chicago Hospitals. He was a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School and also a visiting professor at the Louis Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. He was a global authority in pathology and alcoholic liver disease and for a large part of his career, a professor of Pathology, Gastroenterology, Microbiology and Internal Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University. He published his research in every major medical publication in his field many times over.
A compassionate physician, he was always willing to help friends and strangers. A true physician, he always advised his students to become a physician only if they “had passion for the science of medicine, and empathy for the patient.” A true intellectual, he published two books outside of medicine, “The Phoenicians” and “The Idea of God.” He was an avid stamp collector of his home country of Colombia. An arm-chair philosopher in his spare moments, his favorite authors were Bertrand Russell, Herodotus, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde, Jean-Paul Sartre, Khalil Gibran, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Funeral Mass, 10:30 am, Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045.
